Until recently, the number of mud volcanoes in this unique region was estimated to be about 400, accounting for half of the volcanoes on our planet.
Taking into account the importance of mud volcanoes, in order to convey these natural resources to future generations and to promote the natural heritage of our republic on a large scale, by the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan No. 2315 dated August 15, 2007, in the territory of a part of the mud volcanoes located in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, the "Mud of Baku and Absheron Peninsula" was established. volcano group "State Nature Reserve" was created.
According to the relevant Decree, the main goal of the creation of the State Nature Reserve is the reduction of anthropogenic effects on mud volcanoes, the prevention of intensive construction works in the area and the construction of residential buildings in the zones where volcanoes are likely to erupt. After that, by the Decree No. 294 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated September 29, 2011, the territory of 43 mud volcanoes in the area of 12322.84 ha was declared a reserve. Reserve employees maintain the natural state of the volcanic landscape by regularly conducting scientific stationary observations in 43 mud volcanoes with special protection status, forecasting ecological conditions, preparing the scientific basis of nature protection, studying the dynamics of volcanic processes, and ensuring their protection from anthropogenic interference. The natural history exhibition hall of the complex arouses great interest with its wealth of exhibits. In the "Big cats", "Gobustan fauna", "Footprints of wild animals of Azerbaijan", "Azerbaijani insect world", "Small-sized animal skeletons" corners of the exhibition, skeletons of wild and domestic animals belonging to the fauna of Azerbaijan and the world, insects belonging to the nature of Azerbaijan, water - land animals and reptiles are exhibited. All animal skeletons and creatures displayed in the exhibition are original exhibits. These exhibits have been prepared in accordance with the norms of bioethics and consist of animal skeletons collected from different places by Azerbaijani specialists over the decades after biological death. The natural history exhibition demonstrates the richness and biodiversity of Azerbaijan's fauna. The exhibition features 98 animal skeletons of Azerbaijan and world fauna, 870 different types of dried insects, 57 animals displayed in a special solution, a number of reptiles and amphibians, as well as paleontological exhibits. Pictures and illustrations of various animals are displayed on the walls in order to increase the curiosity of children and schoolchildren about the world around them and to create an impression about animal skeletons. About 80 different types of minerals found in Azerbaijan are displayed in the Minerals exhibition created in the complex. Visitors can see beautiful and rare precious stones, crystals and geological samples brought here from all over our country - from Gobustan to Nakhchivan. The first part of the exhibition, consisting of two parts, shows samples of rock breccia erupted by mud volcanoes, and the second part shows minerals found in various mineral deposits in our country. Here, visitors are presented with information about the Earth's surface, geological processes, and the formation of rocks and minerals. The creation of modern tourism infrastructure around mud volcanoes will increase public awareness of the volcanoes located in these areas and promote them as natural heritage. A parking lot has been built on the territory of the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex to ensure convenient transportation of tourists. Tourists who want to have fun will have the opportunity to join a tour in this difficult terrain on quad bikes, an environmentally friendly means of transport. Be careful when visiting.
