What compensation is paid for lost luggage?

"After checking in at the airport while traveling, the fate of our luggage is in someone else's hands. Sometimes successfully sent luggage is returned either late, damaged, or not returned at all. Of course, this is not very good situation for the travellers. However, the passengers, who know their rights are able to rejoice even in this situation. Because they are entitled to get the compensation for lost and damaged luggage in amount of up to 1250 euros. In Air Transport, all the matters are regulated in accordance with the Warsaw and Montreal Conventions. The rights of the passengers during a flight and the limits of their rights related to the luggage are determined in accordance with these conventions. In accordance with the rules, in order to find lost luggage, an investigation by the Lost and Found Department of the airlines started first. Then higher authorities are involved. If the luggage is not found within a month, the compensation procedures started."

20 USD per 1 kg of lost luggage

If your checked in luggage is lost, damaged or delayed, in accordance with the Warsaw Convention, the airline is responsible for paying the compensation in amount of 250 Poincare Franc (about 20 USD) per kilogram. And in accordance with the Montreal Convention, the liability of the airline is limited to 1250 euros. I.e., claiming higher amount is a waste of time. Because the passengers accept the rules when purchasing the tickets. If the damage occurred due to a defect in the luggage, the passengers are not entitled to claim any compensation.

If your luggage is damaged 

  • "If your luggage is damaged and you detect this when accepting the luggage, you are to submit written application to the airline before leaving the terminal. If your luggage is damaged, you are to submit written application to the airline within 7 days after the luggage is accepted. If your luggage is damaged and, in addition, delayed, you are to notify the airline in writing within 21 days after the luggage is accepted."

Payment for the luggage delayed

Most passengers do not know about this. If your luggage is delayed, you are able to apply to the airline directly or in writing with the invoices indicating the costs you incurred before the luggage was accepted, in order to receive compensation.
