The International Tourism Organization established World Tourism Day on September 27, 1979. Today is celebrated as a holiday for tourism representatives in more than 150 countries around the world, including Azerbaijan.
World Tourism Day has been celebrated in Azerbaijan since 2001, when our country became a member of the International Tourism Organization. The tourism sector in Azerbaijan, which has a rich cultural and historical heritage and favorable natural conditions, is developing rapidly. According to the Decree of President Ilham Aliyev, “Tourism Workers' Day” is also celebrated in our country on September 29. In addition, the “Center for Management and Development of Tourism and Recreation Zones under the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan” public legal entity was established under the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Decree “On the Establishment of the Center for Management and Development of Tourism and Recreation Zones under the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan” signed by the Head of State on August 2 of this year.
The main goal of all measures and activities taken to develop the tourism sector in our country is to form modern service areas that meet high economic, social and environmental requirements, and to ensure that this area becomes one of the main development directions of the country's economy. Rich historical and cultural heritage, favorable natural and geographical conditions and modern recreation centers make Azerbaijan one of the world's tourism centers. Today, various tourist projects are being implemented in the regions located on the tourism routes of our country, including programs aimed at increasing the number of tourists and creating a diverse tourism product.
